How bad have things got?
Lots of reports from very mainstream organisations such as the World Bank, Price Waterhouse Cooper and the International Energy Agency have concluded that we have a very short time left (think a few years at the most) to stop runaway climate change, leading to rises of 6ºC in our children’s and grandchildren’s lifetime. This will create a world almost impossible to grow food and survive in. Greenpeace’s recent report underlines just how crazy the world has got speeding towards a ‘climate cliff’. Climate Change is caused by burning coal, oil and gas. We have to switch as quickly as possible to clean energy sources – wind, solar, tidal and hydro and reduce by half the amount of energy we use by getting much more energy efficient. We can do it – find out more here and click here for some actions that you can take now.
Inspired by 350.org in the US, our aim is to seek urgent reductions in fossil fuel consumption, completely ending their use in the UK by 2030. We will do this through lobbying, direct action, campaigning, education and the media, as well as promoting low carbon lifestyle change. Join us in creating a world with a future that is sustainable, fair and fun.
The Energy Bill currently going through Parliament doesn’t do enough to deliver the clean energy supply that we so badly need in time to avoid runaway climate change. There has to be a target to stop using dirty fossil fuels by 2030 at the latest – there is support across the Labour, Lib Dems and even Conservatives for this, but George Osborne, with the support of the fossil fuel industry, is strongly resisting. We need as many people as possible to write to their MP and get involved in the local meetings that are being arranged around the country.
Enjoy a low carbon life
Lots of people in the UK and around the world are already well on the way to living fossil fuel free lives. Read about the ways that people have already sorted their energy, shelter, transport and food needs without needing fossil fuels.
